Erik is a global citizen, blessed by nationality and further blessed as a resident of Tiny Township. Born Canadian but having grown up in West Africa, South Asia, and Europe, the part of Canada Erik called home and stays closest to his heart were these southern shores of Georgian Bay. When he got nostalgic, it was memories of these pristine shores, deep dark forests, rolling fields and scenic supportive communities that spoke to Erik in the tones of home.
Having spent much of his life in the “developing world”, Erik got to see to some monumental change over the decades, much of it positive and encouraging but some of the change was certainly not for the better. While not a citizen in his host countries, there was little he could do as he watched helplessly as so much of the natural world was being sacrificed in the name of “progress”. It was this that drew Erik to be politically active in Canada. Here Erik is a citizen. Here Erik can, and has, made a difference.
A long-standing environmentalist, Erik’s commitment to the sensible preservation of the environment to mitigate the effects of climate change, threats to biodiversity, and general sustainability for the natural world has been unwavering for decades. With most of his work focused on the preservation of the purest water known to science, Erik has been politically, environmentally, and socially active throughout Tiny and Simcoe County at large having accepted invitations to sit on a number of local boards including AWARESimcoe, the Coldwater Steampunk Festival, and the executive for the local provincial and federal Green Party associations where Erik built and mobilized volunteer teams to carry out events and activities to grow the grassroots both during and between elections.
Erik was campaign manager for the Green Party in the 2022 provincial election; nominated Green Party candidate in the federal election 2019; OPSEU steward 2017 provincial college labour action; volunteer in several other provincial and federal elections; activist for climate action and biodiversity. He has worked with members of all levels of governments on ecology and conservation issues. Most recently was party to the drafting and submission of the petition to the House of Commons seeking federal assistance for the Protection of the Purest Water Known to Science located in the ground under the aggregate extraction pits on French’s Hill in Waverley.
After working on elections in the federal and provincial arenas, while successfully able to move the dial on the conversations and bring attention to important concerns and vital issues, this hasn’t been enough. It is at the municipal level that people’s lives are actually most impacted by politics and policy. Because of this, Erik’s desire to serve his community through people-centred, ecology focused leadership is best accomplished by serving on Tiny Township council.
For October 24th, please elect Erik Schomann to council.
